In the last years Malta has become one of the most important destinations in the Mediterranean for imigrants. The immigration detention facilities in Malta: the closed detention centre in Safi and open camps in Marsa and Hal Far. In the recent years, Malta has become one of the most important entry point centers for migrants of the Mediterranean: approximately two thousand every year. The non-EU citizens are arrested at their arrival for the illegal entry, after which they are transferred into closed detention areas.




















Alessandro Penso studied clinical psychology at Rome's La Sapienza University. In 2007, he received a scholarship to study photojournalism at the "Scuola Romana di Fotografia". Since completing his studies, his work has won several awards, including the PDN Photo Student Award, the PDN Photo Annual Award, Px3 and the Project Launch Award in Santa Fe. He is currently working on issues such as immigration, and sexuality in modern society.
